Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA performs an epic live score accompanying the Shaw Brothers martial arts masterpiece
THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN.
New York, NY – October 12, 2016 – Celestial Pictures and Alamo Drafthouse are proud to announce an event bringing together hip hop and martial arts courtesy of rapper, music producer and filmmaker, RZA -- RZA: LIVE FROM THE 36THCHAMBER, featuring a live re-scoring of the seminal Shaw Brothers film, THE 36thCHAMBER OF SHAOLIN.
Equal part Shaw Brothers disciple and music authority, RZA will lean on his massive musical repertoire to give THE 36thCHAMBER OF SHAOLIN a score unlike anything that has been heard before. RZA’s performance will be re-scored utilizing a Wu-Tang catalog over two decades and will coexist with the film’s existing audio track to create a fully realized, real-time audio and visual experience.
“The influence of Shaw Brothers films on my work has been profound,” said RZA. “From the first time I saw their movies as a kid in New York’s Times Square, I knew that this was something I had to do. For decades, I’ve been dreaming of stepping into the 36th Chamber.”
Masterfully directed by Liu Chia-liang and starring the indomitable Gordon Liu, THE 36thCHAMBER OF SHAOLIN was originally released in1978 and quickly became a defining statement in the film industry in Asia while establishing a new standard in martial arts cinema. It is because of this exceptional standard that RZA personally selected this film to re-score.
