Hui Ying-hung was born in Hong Kong, in 1960. To support her family, she joined Miramar China Dance Troupe at the age of 14 and performed at the Miramar Night Club for three years.

Hui joined Shaw Brothers in 1977. Her first movie was TheBrave Archer (1977), directed by Chang Cheh, in which she played the role of Mu Nian-ci. After a series of minor roles, Hui got her first lead role inThe Tigress Of Shaolin (1979), directed by Luo Qi. She has starred in many movies directed by Liu Chia-liang, and was praised for her performance in Mad Monkey Kung Fu (1979), Return To The 36th Chamber (1980), My Young Auntie (1981), Martial Club (1981), Legendary Weapons Of China (1982) and The Lady Is The Boss (1983). She won the Best Actress Awards in the 1st Hong Kong Film Awards with her performance in My Young Auntie. From 1978 to 1984, she has appeared in over 20 Shaw Brothers' productions, including The Emperor Chien Lung series (1980-82), Buddha's Palm (1982) and Family Light Affair (1984). In most of these movies, she played the role of martial arts heroine, but in Family Light Affair she also gave a memorable performance as a new immigrant.

From 1984 to 1992, Hui has starred in over 30 movies on freelance basis, most of them actions. The Return Of Pom Pom (1984), The Inspector Wears Skirts series (1988-92), Stage Door Johnny (1990) and The Roar Of The Vietnamese (1991) are the better-known titles among them.

In the 1990s, Hui turned to television and starred in a number of TV series, included Lady Flower Fist, At The Threshold Of An Era, Journey To The West and At The Threshold Of An EraII.

In 2001, she was nominated for the Best Support Actress Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards for her performance in Visible Secret (2001).

During 2009 to 2010, she won 4 awards for her performance in At the End of Day Break. (i.e. The Best Supporting Actress Award at the 2009 Golden Horse Awards, the Best Actress Award at Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards 2010, the Best Supporting Actress Award at Asian Film Awards 2010 and the Best Actress Award at Hong Kong Film Award 2010.)
